Gills challenging adventure

In May 2019 Gillian Lee an Australian mountaineer attempted to climb Mount Everest for the fourth time with no oxygen. The route he took was the north side of the mountain away from the human traffic jam. At the height of 7600m, Gills Sherpa guides noticed that he was getting sick. They instructed him to go back down but he refused and continued to reach for the summit. As he got higher his body shut down. The guides dragged him back down to his tent.

Once they got back the guides did everything they could to get him warm. They tucked hot water bottles in the sled/sleeping bag. As they were warming Gill a group of Chinese rope fixers came. Because Gill was sick they decided to help. They couldn’t carry him so they tied ropes to the sled/sleeping bag and pulled him down the mountain.

After a long snow ride, they reached a rocky area. Obviously, they couldn’t drag him anymore so they called in a yak. With 22km and nothing but rock, Gill had to ride, but before he could go the Sherpa’s tied ropes around Gill and the yak so he wouldn’t slip off. Once they arrived at base camp it was a 20min helicopter flight to Kathmandu Hospital.

While Gill was in hospital his mother turned up, not looking surprised. She was furious about what he did to himself and what he did to the Sherpas and the rope fixers. His mum described him as selfish but she was happy that he had survived.

So will Gill try to climb Everest again using a different way or will he give up and go home?

Speech

Introduction

Some people think teaching is an easy job well I think it’s not here are some things about teachers.

Working after school

Every day teachers have to work in school, after school, and At home, teachers have to print off work for the next day, they also have to stay up late marking work wi’ll the rest of the world gets some sleep. Not only do they mark work and print but they also have to plan reports for Primary, intermediate, high school and college. Teachers might have another job to go to, take Mr masters, for example, he is a teacher, volunteer firemen and a rugby coach which might be too much for him because 1. He teaches two times every Wednesday 2. He saving Kaitaia (sometimes). Most teachers when they get home they have to do house chores like washing, cooking dinner, taking their kids to sports training, cleaning up the house and hardest of all straining out your kids by helping them with homelearning and teaching them how to look after them selfs. And at school kids are not the only ones learning, teachers have to learn how kids behave and act so they know what to do when a problem occurs but the problem for the teachers is the amount of work they have to do.

 Class size

Some classes today are just too big to handle for one single teacher or a teacher and a teacher aid there’s just too much stationary to buy, pencils, rubbers, rulers, scissors, stapler, maybe desks and chairs and as kids start recking things teachers don’t have enuff stationary for them so what the teacher does is buy more and more stuff but when they get back to school they change stuff around they make pens as publishing pens, pencils for drafts, felt pen for outlining and only the teacher is allowed to staple paper. Also the noise could be so irritating plus the hours of work they have to do, six hours of noise and work during the day, the noise could also get the teachers bad side which can cause them to growl and make the class have a practice at morning tea or lunchtime but even at morning tea or lunchtime teachers still have to work because they have to be on duty. So pretty much at any time in school teachers are looking after kids.

 Behavior and disabilities

There are many different personalities in a classroom some can be disruptive, some can be nice, encouraging, annoying, responsible and quiet. Some of these students could have learning disabilities this means that they could be very upset, don’t concentrate or have anger issues. So a teacher has to find out a way to help them learn like having a teacher aid to help those who have difficulties. Teachers could give them a goal to achieve and if they do the child gets a reward like free choose or a little bit of time on the playground so they feel proud of themselves and try harder next time.

Hope I changed the way you think about teachers and how hard they work to make us smart.

Maori cartoon strips

W.A.L.T: We are learning to extend our Maori vocab by asking & answering questions in te reo maori and then translate them to English.

Reflection: The hard part for me was picking out different speech bubbles and dividing the page into four. I found the reo easy because all term I have been learning to speak Maori and to extend my Maori vocabulary.
